A Phase III Trial to Evaluate the Protective Efficacy of an Oral Rotavirus Vaccine

The trial is a phase III randomized, double-blind, placebo-controlled trial with the primary objective of evaluating the efficacy of ORV 116E against severe rotavirus gastroenteritis. ORV 116E is being coadministered with childhood vaccines. 6800 subjects will be enrolled. The three trial sites are Centre for Health Research and Development, Society for Applied Studies, New Delhi, Shirdi Sai Baba Rural Hospital, KEM Hospital Research Centre, Pune and Christian Medical College, Vellore.


Neonatal Vitamin A Supplementation for Improving Child Survival

This project aims to assess the efficacy and safety of neonatal vitamin A supplementation administered to neonates. Illnesses are being documented for the 3 day period post administration of the supplement and vital status is ascertained at 3, 6, 9 and 12 months of age.


Folic Acid and Vitamin B12 Supplementation for Prevention of Childhood Infections in Children

The study is an individually randomized trial in which 1000 children received a daily dose of Vitamin B12, Folate, Vitamin B12 and Folate or Placebo. Morbidity (diarrhea, fever, ALRI) are being ascertained biweekly. Ill children are being treated in the study clinic or in hospitals.


Scaling Up of the Revised Diarrhea Management Guidelines

A guide has been developed by SAS for use by program managers that describes the process for introduction of the new diarrhea guidelines in a state or district. The guide covers issues related to improving skills of workers, logistics and supplies, communication support for health worker-caregiver interaction and the entire community, i.e. a combination of issues pertaining to supplies and the demand generation process. The Micronutrient Initiative proposes to implement the revised diarrhea management guidelines in three states followed by an evaluation of the programs that are launched. SAS will incorporate changes in the manual subsequent to its use in the three states.


Accelerated Scale Up of Zinc and ORS for Treatment of Diarrhea in Uttar Pradesh and Gujarat

“Diarrhea Alleviation through Zinc and ORS Therapy” (DAZT) Project is being implemented in Uttar Pradesh and Gujarat. Under this program, the Micronutrient Initiative and AED are scaling up delivery of zinc and ORS for the treatment of diarrhea in children under 5 years of age through public and private sector health service delivery platforms. CHRD is a partner in the evaluation of the program through conduction of household and provider assessments. Data are being collected to assess the coverage of zinc and ORS treatment for diarrhea in the community among all children under 5 years of age through periodic cross sectional surveys.


Partnership with the Translational Health Science and Technology Institute (THSTI), Faridabad in the Vaccine and Infectious Diseases Research Centre (VIDRC) to Study Infectious Diseases and Pathogens to Develop Effective Vaccines and Therapeutics

SAS is a partner in the VIDRC set up under THSTI, Faridabad. SAS will, in partnership with the principal investigator of the VIDRC develop and conduct trials in the areas of Dengue, Japanese Encephalitis, Hepatitis E viruses and Tuberculosis.
