About Us

The Society for Applied Studies was established by Dr. Dilip Mahalanabis in the Year 1990 in West Bengal. In Year 2004, Dr. Mahalanabis extended support to a group of researchers led by Dr. Nita Bhandari to set up the Centre for Health Research and Development, Society for Applied Studies (CHRD-SAS) in New Delhi to pursue research in maternal and child health.

The Centre for Health Research and Development, Society for Applied Studies (CHRD-SAS), New Delhi, is a premier research organization in India. It pursues research and innovation in communities, primarily at the population level. It develops and evaluates single and integrated interventions that can potentially achieve the desired health impact at different points in the life cycle for mothers and children.

A world with healthier babies, children, mothers, and families through solutions from research and practice.

Our mission is to conduct high-quality scientific and implementation research to inform national policy to improve health and well-being of women and children in India and the developing world. We deploy rigorous team-based efforts to generate knowledge, develop and test interventions and tools; design innovative and implementable solutions to improve delivery to enhance impact. Evidence and experiences are synthesized for reorienting policy, strategy and delivery of healthcare for women and children. Through our work, we also attempt to create a pipeline of trained investigators and community researchers for the future.
